Roll Up the Red Carpet - Abolish the Senate
- af: NDP
- mottagare: Harper Government
After a budget boost from Stephen Harper, the Senate will cost Canadians $92,500,000 this year. It will take the annual taxes of more than 8,000 average families to pay the Senate's tab.
So, what are we paying for? The average senator worked just 71 days last year. Barely three months out of twelve. In fact, 31 senators missed more than 1/4 of their few work days.
Before election, Harper promised senate reform. ("I will not name appointed people to the senate." - Stephen Harper, March 14, 2004. "An appointed Senate is a relic of the 19th century." - Stephen Harper, December 14, 2005).
But since taking office in 2006, Stephen Harper has appointed 59 senators.
Unelected, unaccountable senators represent the parties that appoint them -- not the Canadian people. It's time to roll up the red carpet and abolish the Senate.
We, the undersigned residents of Canada, recognize the following:
- that there is no place for an unelected, unaccountable Senate in our democracy;
- that the $92.5 million a year it costs to run this archaic institution would be better spent elsewhere; and
- that appointed senators, especially those who abuse their privileges, do not represent the interests or values of Canadians.
Therefore, we call on the Government of Canada to abolish the unelected, unaccountable Senate once and for all. Skriv underSkriv underSe flere underskriftsindsamlinger:
