Improve Food Safety and Demand Accountability: Support the Safe Food Act of 2007
Foodborne illness is a serious public health problem. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 13 people die every day due to foodborne illness. In the past year alone, hundreds of Americans were infected with E. coli O157:H7 from fresh spinach and lettuce, and in recent weeks, the contamination of pet food has revealed that contamination is not solely limited to the human food supply.

Even though people and pets are dying from contaminated food, current food safety laws rely heavily on food producers, processors and growers to regulate themselves; voluntarily follow “Good Manufacturing Practices” and voluntarily recall contaminated products. This type of voluntary implementation of food safety measures is insufficient to protect American consumers. What we need is more effective oversight and stronger food safety laws, like those proposed in The Safe Food Act of 2007 (HR 1148/S 654).

By establishing a single Food Safety Administration and modernizing, consolidating, and strengthening Federal food safety laws and their enforcement, the Safe Food Act of 2007 will address many of the problems plaguing our current fragmented and antiquated federal food safety system.

Although the Safe Food Act is much needed, Congress has failed to act on this important piece of legislation in previous years, and once again this bill is in danger of dying in committee. Please sign the following petition to ask the Committee members who are currently considering the Safe Food Act of 2007 to pass this legislation out of committee and give it a chance to be considered by the full House and Senate.
