Tell Philippines President Benigno Aquino III to Keep Promises to Stop Human Rights Abuses

When Philippines president Benigno Aquino III took office in 2010, he promised to put an end to human rights abuses by the military. But in the year that Aquino has been in power, there have been seven killings and three disappearances of activists. Evidence suggests that the military played a role in all of these.

Aquino cites "frivolous suits" as a reason for slow, faulty investigations into abuse accusations. To the oppressed activists of the Philippines, the military crimes are far from frivolous.

The military in the Philippines uses its power to quiet activists and leftist sympathizers through death and disappearance. In some instances these abuses occur in the light of day with witnesses to verify the guilt of military personnel who commit them.

Tell President Benigno Aquino III to send a strong message against human rights abuses and keep his promise to fully prosecute military officials involved in human rights abuses.
Human rights abuses committed by the military against the people of the Philippines, namely activists, must come to an end.

Upon coming into office it was promised that the military would receive a strong message that killing and disappearing activists would be now unacceptable. However, in the last year seven people have been killed and three more disappeared.

Despite strong evidence of military involvement in these killings and disappearances, investigations either lag or are stopped entirely.

Keep promises to stop abuses by the military and send a strong message by seeing through investigations against military personnel and fully prosecuting those responsible for the recent deaths and disappearances.
