Call on the government to guarantee that they will increase social security payments by the rate of inflation.

The increasing pressure on the cost of living is something that we are all individually feeling and seeing in our own communities. Low-income households spend a larger proportion of their budgets on energy and food and are therefore relatively more affected by increases in prices than other households. By October 2022, the poorest fifth of households will experience inflation of 18%, compared to 11% for the richest fifth.

Right now, average weekly earnings are at 2008 levels and by January 2023, over 60% of families are expected to be in fuel poverty; it's crucial that individuals receive the necessary support to shield them from the most excessive of increases.

In the coming months, the UK Government will have the opportunity to introduce targeted measures to support those most in need. That is why The Salvation Army is calling on the Government to guarantee that they will increase social security payments by the rate of inflation so that no-one is pushed further into poverty.

You can help us make sure that no-one is put under even greater strain through no fault of their own.
