Stop the Abuse of Elephants
Stop the Abuse of elephants.
On May 12, 2007 in Santa Fe Springs California, the city I live in will be celebrating their 50th anniversary. On that day the city has decided to have a parade with marching bands, etc., but I was surpised to read that the city also planned to have an elephant walk down our small city streets!! There will be hundred, if not thousands of spectators lining the city streets and loud noises from the marching bands. An elephant is not meant for human entertainment purposes. I am begging you, Fred Latham, city manager, along with Joseph D. Serrano Sr, Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem Ronald S. Kernes, along with the Couselmembers Louie Gonzales, Betty Putnam and Gustavo R. Velasco to please rethink the marching of the elephant in the Santa Fe Springs Parade. Please think years back in the case of a circus when an elephant "broke down" and attacked it's trainer and another human being and then exited the circus tent and broke out of a fence into the city streets. It began charging into the city traffic and cars. The elephant behaved this way because it was pushed too much by it's trainers and more than likely abused by bullhooks, a stick with a sharp hook at the end, that is what Barnum and Bailey's Circus trainers have and still do use on their performing elephants. I don't know where you found your elephant to use in the parade, but for your information also, elephants also suffer in captivity form tuberculosis and fatal foot rot due to not getting the exercise they would normally get in their natural habitat. TB is often carried by performing elephants and can spread from human to elephant and vice versa. Please, Mr. Latham, Mr. Mayor, Mr. Mayor Pro Tem, and Councilmembers, please join us in rejoicing in the elephants that have been mercifully retired and speak for the others who await their freedom.
