Thousands of Cows Were Trapped at Sea for Months, Suffering the Consequences of the Horrific Animal Export Trade

Nearly 3,000 cows spent over 2 months trapped at sea, stuck in limbo between Uruguay and Turkey due to missing or incorrect health records.

Roughly 1,400 of those poor cows were pregnant.

Many of the cows died. Many of their calves are missing or dead. This suffering and tragedy is 'normal' in the world of live animal exports, and we must finally end it for good.

Allegedly, nearly 150 births occurred on this hellish ship -- baby calves came into a terrifying world where they were immediately subjected to brutal horrors. Many of these calves died, and others have gone completely missing. Only 50 calves were accounted for at the time of this writing.

Unfortunately, this is exactly the problem with live animal exports, which always puts animals at risk for the sake of profit. Every year over 1 billion animals are transported at sea, trapped in harrowing and dark conditions, wholly inadequately protected by existing regulation.

Live animal exports are defined by neglect and abuse. Animals are crushed into overcrowded enclosures that are not temperature controlled, meaning they boil in sweltering heat or freeze in the cold. They rarely get enough food or water, and forget about veterinary care. Animals on these ships are handled roughly and often injured. It is rare that there are not a sizable amount of deaths on these journeys.

It's time for the international community to treat this crisis as an actual crisis and ban live animal exports entirely. Sign to demand that Turkey and the European Union immediately ban all live animal exports in and out of their territories -- there is no humane way to do these nightmare journeys, so they must end for good.
