Defend Workers' Rights - Defend Pedro Gonzalez

It has come to our attention that Pedro Gonzalez, a dedicated member of the dining services staff, was fired in January for missing days of work in December and January. Pedro worked for Collins Dining Hall for nine years. An unexpected family emergency required him to leave for Mexico immediately. We understand the difficult circumstances regarding this choice. However, we expect all staff members at Claremont McKenna to be treated with respect and we feel that upholding his termination would be a drastic measure to take in a case where miscommunication has clearly occurred.

After nearly a decade of service, we feel that the decision to fire Pedro illustrates a lack of sensitivity and understanding that is unacceptable in a small school such as Claremont McKenna. Furthermore, the resources available to the Spanish-speaking staff are inadequate, both in content and form. The inaccessibility of information regarding emergency leave rules and other regulations make CMC's unrelenting enforcement unfair and unreasonable. Pedro is a valued member of the Claremont McKenna community. We hope that that the situation can be resolved in a way that allows him to return to his former job.
