Let President Obama Know Where You Stand on Food Safety

President Obama is considering appointing a former Monsanto vice president, Mike Taylor, to head the Food Safety Working Group at the FDA.

As Jill Richardson writes at LaVidaLocavore, Taylor thinks the FDA wastes too much time on food safety inspections at meat packing plants.

If you have read anything about the horrendous working conditions at US meatpacking plants you know food borne illnesses, like the recent outbreaks of E-coli in the food supply can often be traced back to beef slaughter practices that do not protect consumers from contamination.

As noted at the Ethicurean, Mr. Taylor is also responsible for killing legislation that would have compelled producers of milk containing rBGH/rBST to label their product as containing these hormones. Bovine growth hormone is not safe for consumption by humans.

Mr. Taylor may soon be heading up a food safety working group within the FDA.

If you find Mr. Taylor a poor choice for this appointment, please sign the petition.

Mr. President:

We the undersigned urge you to reconsider appointing Mike Taylor to the Food Safety Working Group at the FDA, and to appoint someone who has the best interests of consumers at the forefront of his efforts in same.

The FDA should work to better protect the food supply from contamination by E-coli, and other harmful by-products of unclean production facilities, and from unsafe additives that find their way into milk and other foods.

Mike Taylor's previous association with Monsanto would seem at odds with the requirements of a position which concerns itself with food safety, as he has worked in the past to see that concerns over such were put aside in the interests of profit for corporations.

Thank you for taking the time to read our letter of concern.
