The City and County of San Francisco for the last past few years have felt it to be a need to cut funds and or close Bayview Hunter%u2019s Point Foundation%u2019s Methadone Clinic. Over 200 clients depend on the services at the clinic everyday.
These services include giving clients a daily dose of methadone, which is a synthetic chemical that helps to support past drug users from using illegal opiates and to give them relief of opiate side effects. Services include yearly exams, mental health evaluations, groups of support for people who have issues dealing with family, children, sexually transmitted infections, blood test, HIV information, Hepatitis C support etc.
We understand that because of budget cuts a lot of organizations are closing their doors to clients. However in this time of depression, drug use is only going to rise. Sexually transmitted infections are going to grow even more at an alarming rate. HIV will be even more prevalent in our community if we allow clients to go back to the streets without some form of Methadone to help them stay clean.
The mayor and the city of San Francisco have the authority to keep our doors open. The City and county of San Francisco have the authority to dictate how and where the funds go. Many people understand the importance of the Methadone Clinic. You, too, must appeal to Mayor Gavin Newsom and the City and County of San Francisco today to speak up for keeping the methadone clinic in the Bayview Hunter%u2019s Point Area.
We, the undersigned, call on Mayor Gavin Newsome, and the City and County of San Francisco to not take away or cut funding for Bayview Hunter%u2019s Point Foundation%u2019s Methadone Clinic.
There is great evidence that show the necessity of having a Methadone clinic. One of the most clear reasons to keep this type of clinic available is we have seen a significant drop in HIV cases due to the lack of intravenous drug use. The Methadone clinics sole purpose is to gradually guide Opiate users off of the harmful drug and eventually on to a life of no drugs at all.
HIV is growing at an alarming rate especially in the people of color communities. One way that HIV is spread is by the sharing of needles during intravenous drug use. Methadone clinics in our area, especially Bayview Hunter%u2019s Point location is strongly needed. HIV is high in our community and keeping a Methadone clinic here is just one more way of helping to prevent more HIV cases.
