After Cecil the Lion Was Killed By Brutal Trophy Hunters, the UK Said “Never Again.” They Lied.

We all remember the tragic killing of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe, perpetrated by a dentist from the U.S. who paid $55,000 for the privilege of murdering a highly treasured and endangered animal. Ever since then, the animal advocacy and conservation communities have been working hard to end the cruel activity of trophy hunting. The so-called "sport" gets its name from the horrifying tradition of keeping a part of the slaughtered animal as a trophy. Heads of lions, skins of tigers, feet from elephants, or horns from rhinos are among some of the most prized souvenirs.

Oftentimes, the best way to discourage trophy hunting is to ban the imports of these trophies into other countries, since most trophy hunters -- typically the rich and elite -- come from abroad into countries such as Zimbabwe, South Africa, or Namibia to take what they want and bring them back home. And that's just what the UK government promised to do when the shock of Cecil's slaughtering resounded throughout the world.

It has now been 5 years since Cecile the lion was murdered, which means the UK has spent 5 years twiddling its thumbs when it comes to banning hunting trophy imports. But the UK's government has failed to fulfill that promise, allowing an estimated 60 lions to be slaughtered by British hunters. And that estimate is low.

Sign the petition if you think enough is enough! The United Kingdom's Parliament must immediately introduce legislation banning the importation of hunting trophies before one more animal dies for this horrible sport!

Since the 1950s, the population of lions in the wild has fallen by a staggering 98%, bringing the number to a measly 13,000 compared to 450,000 just 70 years ago. They are undoubtedly on the brink of extinction, and at this rate, their disappearance will come painfully soon -- experts say within the next 30 years. The United Kingdom is prioritizing hunters, who only seek to flaunt their wealth and stroke their own ego, over the survival of an entire species.

One member of Parliament claimed that the legislative body was "continuing to work on the issue and would publish its response as soon as it was practical." Is it practical to waste time delaying this ban while the extinction of wild lions looms in our lifetime? We certainly don't think so.

That's why we're calling on the UK Parliament to introduce and pass legislation at once that would completely ban hunting trophy imports! Sign the petition and join the fight today.
