Tobacco Companies are Targeting Colorado Kids: Please Support HB20-1001

Tobacco and nicotine prevention is even more important today as Colorado begins to recover from the pandemic. The coronavirus attacks our lungs. Good lung and respiratory health is critical to fighting and surviving the coronavirus. That is hard for a state that tops the nation in teen vaping rates.

We must do everything we can to ensure HB20-1001 - a bill that will prevent teens from smoking and hold retailers who sell to minors accountable - passes this year. We are almost across the finish line and we need your help to get us there!

Please take just a moment to let your Senator know that they must vote YES on HB20-1001 and pass this critical bill. We cannot go another year without evidence-based and effective policies that will protect our youth from nicotine addiction and improve our lung health.
Dear [Senator],

Colorado leads the nation in teen vaping. This means that more than one in four teens in your district use nicotine products everyday. Studies have shown that a majority of lifetime smokers started before the age of 18. To me and my family, keeping tobacco out of the hand of our youth is at the top of the list for this session.

It is way too easy for youth to get hold of nicotine products in Colorado. Our laws do not even come close to the prevention measures seen in almost every other state. No wonder we have the highest rates in the country. You can do something about that by voting for HB20-1001.

We are in the middle of a pandemic that preys on weak lung health. Colorado's recovery depends on lawmakers instituting evidence-based policies that keep us healthy. We cannot go another year without accountability and enforcement measures for stores that sell these highly addictive products to minors. Colorado could raise the legal smoking age to 30, but it would be meaningless because we do not have the enforcement measures in place. Good lung and respiratory health is critical to fighting and surviving the coronavirus.

Lawmakers have reallocated money from the Amendment 35 funds to help fill the budget hole left in the wake of the pandemic. This was a way to lessen the blow. However, these dollars would have normally gone to tobacco prevention and cessation. Without these resources, now is the time to strengthen enforcement and accountability as an evidence-based prevention measure.

House Bill 20-1001 gives teens a fighting chance against smoking. This is a fair and reasonable policy that will undoubtedly keep nicotine products out of the hands of teens. If this bill dies this session, so will many Coloradans who fall victim to the tobacco industry. I'm so grateful for the work you do on behalf of your constituents, please vote yes and support HB 20-1001.

Sincerely,
