Protect NM's Children From Asthma-Causing Diesel School Buses

Every day, hundreds of thousands of children breathe in toxic diesel fumes on their way to and from school. The diesel emissions pouring from school buses can cause wheezing, bronchitis and more intense asthma attacks. In fact, 1 in 11 New Mexican children already suffer from asthma.

But there is hope. Under the Obama administration, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) busted Volkswagen for cheating on diesel emissions standards. Now, thanks to diligent enforcement of commonsense protections, the carmaker is shelling out an $18 million settlement and it's all earmarked to reduce diesel pollution.

The state has the money to buy clean electric buses and do away with the aging dirty diesel fleets in school districts across the state. However, we already know that Governor Martinez and her administration have a long history of putting polluter profits above the health of everyday New Mexicans like you and me.

It's up to us to make sure the governor does the right thing and seizes this once-in-a-lifetime shot to transform New Mexico's school buses and the lives of the students who ride them. That's why we're asking the legislature to put their full support behind clean electric buses. By standing together, we will muster community voices and our legislators to put unbearable pressure on the Martinez administration to do right by our kids.

Sign the petition today and urge the New Mexico legislature to support clean electric buses and pressure Governor Martinez to do the right thing and protect our children from toxic diesel emissions.
Subject: Governor Martinez: It's time to transition New Mexico to clean electric school buses.

Dear Legislator,

Dirty diesel school buses emit dangerous pollutants that kids breathe into their developing lungs, causing respiratory illnesses, aggravating asthma and exposing youth to cancer-causing pollutants.

We have a great opportunity to utilize New Mexico's $18 million portion of the Volkswagen settlement fund. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency settled with Volkswagen over Clean Air Act violations after the car company cheated on clean air testing for their diesel vehicles. The New Mexico Environment Department is working to create a plan to use these funds.

Join us in calling on Governor Martinez and the Environment Department to use this money to help our kids breathe easy!

Thank you,
