Save free school lunches. Don't let children in poverty go hungry!

I received free school meals throughout all my time at school - from age of four right through to 18. For me, this free food was essential to make sure I didn't go hungry during my school day. Free school meals enabled me to focus on my school work instead of an empty stomach. For many children on free school meals however, this is the only hot meal they'll get each day.

And yet, the Conservative government, supported by the DUP, have just voted through cuts to free school meals in England which will take this food away from one million of our poorest children.

At the moment, all children in all households that have been switched to universal credit also qualify for free school meals. But now, English families on universal credit will soon see the income threshold for free school meals slashed to £7,400 a year. Taking food away from a child in poverty is unforgivable.

Child poverty in the UK is on the rise and doctors are reporting an increase in diseases of malnutrition, such as rickets, in children. Three-quarters of parents with incomes under £15,000 say they are not always able to afford food. I consider myself lucky to have received free school meals, and so I believe we must protect our poorest children from malnourishment and hunger.

Sign now to demand that this cruel cut, taking food away from hungry children, is reversed today.
