Punish the Deed, NOT the Breed!
Right now the State of Oregon is giving consideration to matching Colorado's extremist laws on pitbulls, totally banning them from the state. This is completely unreasonable and does not fit the truth about them. Did you know that a German Shepherd is roughly 50% more likely to bite you than a pitbull? Yet, no one wants to outlaw German Shepherds! I say punish the deed, be selective. Most of the time it's the owner's fault either for not training it, not controlling it, or even for abusing it in many cases. I say take it on a case-by-case basis, don't "throw out the child with the bathwater". Pitbulls used to be called "Nanny Dogs" back in the early 1900's because they were so good & protective with young children that they were often trusted to watch over them as needed. They do look intimidating, but if raised with love and compassion, and are taught well, as with any domestic dog then they are a loving companion for an entire family.
Please research this yourself, and then join me in supporting this wonderful and so badly misunderstood family friend!!
We the undersigned, feel that the legislation now pending against pitbull dogs is unfair.
We ask that you consider the statistics showing that pitbulls are much less likely to bite than many other common breeds, including German Shephards and others, who are not at risk from this legislation. We ask that punishment be on an individual basis, the dog and/or the owner who is responsible, not the entire breed as a whole.
Did you know that in the early 1900's pitbulls were called and used as "Nanny Dogs" because they were so good with children and protective of them?
Please don't pass blanket legislation, but put the blame where it belongs with each individual. Please do not punish an entire breed over the irresponsible acts of a few bad owners and a few abused animals. "Punish the deed, not the breed".
We thank you for your valuable time, and hope you will consider our concerns before you vote.
