End minority rule: Kill the Senate Fillibuster!
- von: Simon Holden
- empfänger: Senator Charles E Schumer, Chairman US Senate Rules Committee
"A filibuster, or "speaking or talking out a bill", is a form of obstruction in a legislature or other decision-making body whereby one attempts to delay or entirely prevent a vote on a proposal by extending a debate on that proposal. A popular saying is "filibuster it to death!"
The rule can also be seen as an "escape valve" to ensure that the minority would have a tool to use in extreme circumstances in which detrimental legislation may pass by a possibly misguided political majority.
The problem is that it's possible for a truly obstructionist politician or political party to set up a roadblock to any and all legislation of their opponents in order for them to fail - resulting, effectively, in minority rule.
In the past the filibuster has been used sparingly. In the current, highly polarized political environment it has resulted in minority rule as the threat of a filibuster has been applied in almost 80% of legislative procedures. The will of the People has been repeatedly usurped and the change that people voted for, when the Democrats swept both houses, has been neutralized.
The Senate Rules Committee can eliminate or modify the filibuster rule for the next legislative session of the Senate. It is While nobody would wish to deny the minority's ability to influence policy we cannot allow the minority to put a freeze on the wishes of the majority when it comes to making the USA a better place for all its citizens. Please sign this petition to the Rules Committee Chairman, Senator Charles E. Schumer.
Dear Senator Schumer,
We, the signatories of this petition, ask that you take serious steps to limit the scope of the Senate filibuster. If it is not possible to immediately prevent an abusive minority dictating to the majority in the Senate in the current session, then we ask that you ensure that steps are taken when crafting the rules for the next legislative session to limit their ability to derail constructive legislation.
