I-440 (Tennessee) Speed Limit Increase

"The I-440 speed limit could be considered inherently malicious, and intended for monetary gain by throttling its commuters to the point of frustration, and ultimate disregard for its nonsensical restriction."-Steven W.

Since its expensive completion in 1986-87, the I-440 has been a highway of much debate and great convenience. With an "Annual average daily traffic" of more than 100,000 vehicles, the I-440 remains heavily congested during peak driving hours. If you have ever traveled on I-440 before, during, or after rush-hour, then it is probable that you find the restricted 55mph speed limit as hindering during normal weather conditions. This limited number seems almost arbitrary when contrasted with the noticeably higher typical speeds of motorists at any given time. The "85th Percentile Rule" has generally been regarded as a traffic engineer's  way to set roadway speed limits. Through daily empirical evidence, it is clear that most drivers travel in excess of 60 mph. I ask you to sign this petition to encourage our government officials to reassess the posted speed limits on I-440.

We the undersigned,

Request that the Interstate 440 speed limit be raised to a minimum of 65mph. The 55mph limit that is now in effect is simply too low for normal driving conditions. Being that the I-440 has an AADT of over 100,000 vehicles, we also believe that a raised limit would facilitate more harmonious traffic flow. In speculation, most drivers travel the I-440 at over 60mph presently. A higher speed limit would be conducive towards a more efficient morning and evening commute, as well as less fear of prosecution for travelling above posted limits. Please consider this petition as a formal request from present commuters of the Interstate 440, and thank you for taking the time to read this.

Sincerely,
