THE DO BETTER PLEDGE

BLACK MEN IN AMERICA HAVE GOT TO DO A BETTER JOB OF REPRESENTING THEMSELVES. IF YOU ARE A BLACK MAN, WE INVITE YOU TO SIGN THE PLEDGE BELOW AND PROMISE THAT YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE AN EFFORT TO DO BETTER. OUR GOAL IS TO GET 1 MILLION BLACK MALES TO PLEDGE THAT THEY ARE GOING TO DO BETTER
OUR PROBLEM IS...
  1. Of all black men living with HIV/AIDS, the primary transmission category was sexual contact with other men, followed by injection drug use and high-risk heterosexual contactFor
  2. Black males ages 25-29: 11,695 per 100,000 ARE IN PRISON. (That's 11.7% of Black men in their late 20s.)
  3. 70% of all black children are born out of wedlock.
  4. 85% of black children do not live in a home with their fathers.
  5. Black men in America engage in polygamous relationships, 3 1/2 times that of White or Hispanics.
  6. Nearly 2 million black males are either currently in a state or federal prison or have been in one.
  7. In 2005, African American men were 1.3 times as likely to have new cases of lung and prostate cancer, compared to non-Hispanic white men.
  8. African American men are twice as likely to have new cases of stomach cancer as non-Hispanic white men.
  9. African Americans men have lower 5-year cancer survival rates for lung and pancreatic cancer, compared to non-Hispanic white men.
  10. In 2005, African American men were 2.4 times as likely to die from prostate cancer, as compared to non-Hispanic white men.
  11. In 2005, African American men were 30% more likely to die from heart disease, as compared to non-Hispanic white men.
  12. African Americans are 1.5 times as likely as non-Hispanic whites to have high blood pressure.Black males ages 15-19 die from homicide at 46 times the rate of white males their age.
