To Promote Gun Safety

We wish to petition the state of Indiana to address our Child Access Prevention (CAP) laws, which were designed to protect our children from injury and death caused by negligently stored guns in the home.
On Jan. 27, 2009, Justin Fretz was accidentally shot and killled at the home of fellow student.  It wasn't uncommon for the boys to handle the various guns as they were not secured, nor were the boys always supervised.
There are many other incidents similar to this one each year in Indiana but rarely is the public informed of the details. Of all 28 states with CAP laws, Indiana has the 2nd highest mortality rate among minors as well as an incomplete CAP law.
Requiring safety devices and proper storage of all firearms where minors are present, would protect our children as well as our 2nd Ammendment rights.

We, the undersigned, wish to petition the state of Indiana to reconsider our Child Access Prevention (CAP) laws which were originally designed to protect our children from unnecessary death or injury due to unsafe storage of firearms.
Currently, our law is loosely defined and only "encourages" safety devices and proper storage of firearms.  Requiring these would further protect our children as well as our 2nd Ammendment rights.
The family and friends of Justin Fretz thank you for taking the time to read and consider the impact this ammended law can make.
