On Wednesday, June 17th, 2015, a white male shot and killed nine black victims in the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church while they were attending services. The gunman, identified as Dylann Roof, reportedly said, "Y'all rape our women and y'all have taken over the country. And I have to do what I have to do," before opening fire.
The suspect's website contains a racist manifesto and photos of Roof posing with the Confederate Flag, as well as Nazi symbols. His crime was clearly motivated by his contempt for African Americans. As with many Americans, the Confederate Flag serves as a banner for his racist views, just like the Nazi swastika did in WWII Germany.
Naming state roads after Confederate generals glorifies racist ideals and validates hateful actions like Roof's shooting. Please sign the petition to urge South Carolina officials to rename state roads!
