On May 20th the Gilroy City Council will decide whether or not to defund your public access station. This means CMAP could be closed in Gilroy on July 1st.
Here is what you will lose if CMAP closes:
CMAP is Gilroy's Free Speech or public access television station. For 18 years, CMAP has provided access to media tools, training, and television distribution on local cable channels to the people of Gilroy. Anyone can come to CMAP and learn to use cameras, audio equipment and even a TV studio for low or no cost.
Many in Gilroy have learned to make TV shows to share their talents, information, and ideas. They have also created videos for business, school or just plain fun and telecast those messages on your public access channel and the internet.
Youth Programs
CMAP has trained hundreds of youth in workplace readiness, digital technologies and communication skills that prepared them for jobs or higher education.
Community Event Coverage
Our staff and interns document and telecast many community events including candidate forums, elections, high school sports, graduations, holiday parades, the Garlic Festival, Party in the Park, National Night Out and many more.
Support for Non-Profits
We use our experience and equipment to help non-profit organizations create compelling videos so they can reach those in need via TV and the internet.
Support for Small Business and Downtown
Many small businesses have found an affordable home under our roof. We provide space in our building for a small business incubator, which has supported more than 100 companies and entrepreneurs bringing new business downtown.
What will the city do with the money it takes from CMAP?
The city would put the money into equipment that would further enhance the production quality of its televised meetings.
What you can do:
Sign this petition and tell your City Council representatives that you support CMAP and value the services and opportunities It provides to youth, small business, non-profit organizations and the public at large.
If you want to go a step further, you can attend the May 20th meeting at 6 pm and show your support for CMAP in person.
