Under
international law, refugees are persons who "
owing to well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his (sic) nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country ... " (1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees)
Generally, refugees are people who have been forced to flee their
homes, their
lands, have lost
family and friends, have few possessions and have been the
subject of human rights violations.
The general term 'refugee' is severely misused, refugees are NOT to be mistaken with the illegal assylum seekers that float off our shores, seeking illegal security every year.
In june 2009, 3 sudanese refugees in sydney were beaten almost to death by white australian youths, this is not uncommon yet not publicised nearly enough. Awareness needs to be spread through society that treatment of these educated people who have chosen to immigrate to this country because of prosecution of thier; race, values or political standing is unjust, inhumane & severely morally lacking.
Refugees are escapees from an opressive world, dont make the land they escape to oppressive too.
