Every Hospital Must Have a Trained Care Provider for Sexual Assault Survivors

This may shock you, but not every nurse is trained adequately to properly treat a victim of sexual assault. But a bill in Illinois aims to change that. This bill would require hospitals to employ enough Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) so that any victim of sexual assault would be treated by one within 90 minutes of arriving at an emergency department.

Sign on to support this bill as it will ensure better treatment for victims and higher chances of catching and charging perpetrators.

I live in Chicago and I am a survivor of sexual assault. I refuse to accept that people in my community are not getting the care and advocacy they deserve when faced with something so awful. But I need your help to tell legislators this matters to us.

Attorney General Lisa Maddigan said, "After years of unwillingness and delay, this bill, if it becomes law, will finally require Illinois hospitals to do what they should have been doing all along. I think it should be a moral obligation, but because it hasn't worked that way, we'll make it a legal obligation."

This is absolutely right. Victims of sexual assault deserve to be treated kindly, thoroughly and with respect. Nurses know how to work with the human body and most of them are amazing with patients. But they don't have all the training they need to both care for the victim and help police in catching offenders. Nurses are in a unique position to make a big difference in the outcome of a sexual assault, and this legislation would require hospitals to help them get the training they need to be effective.

Please sign to demand hospitals employ enough trained nurses to treat sexual assault victims properly.
