This City Is Threatening Teens Who Trick-or-Treat With Jail Time

At what point does a kid become too old to trick-or-treat? It's a question that prompts mixed reactions from parents and kids alike, but in Chesapeake, Virginia, the answer is 13-years-old — and it's codified into law. Even worse, the penalty for not abiding can include jail time!

Yes, that's right. Anyone 13 and over caught trick-or-treating could be found "guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine of not less than $25 nor more than $100 or by confinement in jail for not more than six months or both."

Please sign this petition demanding that Chesapeake change this ridiculous ban and let kids be kids for as long as they want.

The city's restriction on fun doesn't just include age limits. Halloween-lovers caught trick-or-treating past 8pm can be charged with a misdemeanor as well, and could potentially face jail time up to 30 days.

Sure, there are a few bad apples out there who are more interested in the trick part of Halloween, rather than the treat — but should that ruin the fun for everyone? And should a minor ever face jail time for something as innocuous as trick-or-treating?

We don't think so.

Chesapeake, please do better. Change the law and let families decide what's right for their kids.
