Burma, Free Political Prisoners!

In Burma, you could be sitting in jail--indefinitely--for having once owned a fax machine. Many of Burma's approximately 254 political prisoners were robbed of their freedom over ownership of a computer or other modern technological conveniences. Such arrests typically targeted people who had pissed off the country's former repressive military regime.

Burma's current President Thein Sein has implemented many needed reforms and released many of the country's political prisoners, but he needs to issue a blanket amnesty for those remaining in prison so that the country can continue moving in the direction of democracy. Burma has also been unnecessarily secretive about where prisoners are located and what they stand accused of.

Tell Burma's president it's time to forgive and release all prisoners detained for political affiliation.

We the undersigned thank you for the many important reforms you have already made in Burma and for the prisoners you have already released.

However, we are sad to learn that approximately 254 political prisoners are still being detained. Some of these people have lost their freedom for nothing more serious than owning a computer or a fax machine. Clearly, Burma will not be able to make serious or permanent strides toward a fair and just democracy until these prisoners have been released.

Please issue an immediate and blanket amnesty for all Burmese political prisoners.
