Petition to Return Malaysian Elephants in Japan Back to Their Natural Habitat in Malaysia

The Asian Elephant is a native wildlife species of Malaysia and naturally lives in tropical rainforests with large roaming areas, warm climate, and natural ecosystems. However, some Malaysian elephants have been sent to zoos in Japan through animal exchange or exhibition programs.

This situation raises concerns regarding animal welfare, conservation ethics, and habitat suitability. Elephants are highly intelligent, social, and wide-ranging animals that require large forest areas, natural vegetation, and social groups to live healthily. Zoo environments, especially in countries with four seasons like Japan, are very different from the elephants’ natural tropical habitat.

Living in confined spaces and unfamiliar climates may cause physical health problems, stress, behavioral issues, and shorter lifespans. Elephants are also social animals that normally live in herds, and separating them from their natural environment and social structure can negatively affect their mental well-being.

Malaysia still has suitable natural habitats for elephants such as:

    Taman Negara
    Belum-Temengor Forest Complex
    Endau-Rompin National Park

These areas are more suitable and natural for Malaysian elephants compared to zoo environments overseas.

    Offer a Solution

Several solutions can be considered to address this issue:

    The Malaysian government, through the
Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia,
should initiate discussions with the relevant zoos and authorities in Japan to repatriate the Malaysian elephants back to Malaysia.
The elephants can first be placed at the
National Elephant Conservation Centre Kuala Gandah
for rehabilitation, health monitoring, and adaptation before being released into suitable protected forest habitats.
