In 2013 seven children died when a tornado ripped through their Oklahoma towns. As a result of this tragedy the State decided to build tornado shelters in schools to better protect children.
The shelters were set to be funded by $40 million in revenues from corporate taxes. Now Republican leaders want to scrap the shelter plan to give tax breaks to corporations operating in the State. The tax is a miserly $1.25 for every $1,000 invested in the state. A temporary tax cut has been in place on the tax since 2010, now the powers that be want to make it permanent.
Governor Fallin, what will you say to families of children killed in future tornados if this plan is cut? It's time to look out for children and families instead of offering tax breaks as a means to stay in power.
Dear Governor Fallin,
We the undersigned demand you put families before corporate tax breaks. When it comes to a choice between tornado shelters and the safety of children the choice should be easy.
Stop pushing for corporate tax cuts in Oklahoma and use the money generated to fund tornado shelters to keep kids safe.
