This Teacher Was Suspended for Video of Her Dancing on Her Private Facebook

Kandice Mason is a highly educated and passionate school teacher. She was about to head back to school this year at West Hoke Middle School when she learned she was suspended because someone had forwarded a video of her pole dancing that she'd posted on her private Facebook page to school officials.

Kandice did nothing wrong as far as I'm concerned.

Demand school officials lift her suspension, issue a public apology and end their sex negative ways!

I myself am a hobby pole dancer and I'm really sick of how the world shames particularly women for enjoying pole dancing. It displays society's deeply held anti-stripper, anti-sex worker attitudes. Although there are women who are exploited in these industries, by and large they are choosing this work and the way we alienate them from society doesn't make anyone safer or happier. I think the fear of sex work is more about sexism and the fear of women owning their own bodies and choosing how to use them.

Kandice loves pole dancing and she doesn't feel ashamed of that. But school officials think that makes her a bad role model for kids.

First of all, this video was posted on her private Facebook account that no student or parent has access to. Second of all, I would like to challenge the idea that a woman using her body to pole dance is setting a bad example. In fact, I think it sets a good example because it shows a woman owning her own body and expressing herself in a way that makes her feel strong and confident and good! I love the message that would send kids.

But to be clear, Kandice didn't share her hobby with the kids at all. Someone with malicious intent sent it to school officials, probably out of fear and sex negativity. The school's choice to suspend her only displays their old fashioned and fearful attitudes about women, sex and sex workers.

Kandice is an adult woman, a single mother of two and has advanced degrees. She did not bring her pole dancing into the public sphere and did not share it with her students. She should be able to enjoy this hobby however she wants.

Please sign my petition telling the school to lift Kandice's suspension immediately and apologize. She did nothing wrong.

In fact, she's a really talented dancer and everyone should go watch her videos!
