Trump just released his 2019 budget proposal and hidden in all the cuts is one HUGE change that's as cruel as it is inefficient. Trump wants to change the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — commonly called food stamps — to pre-packed boxes of lower-quality food.
Sign my petition to tell Trump not to make this change that will result in more government waste and cruel unhealthy food choices for families.
Right now, anyone on SNAP can choose what they buy, within set guidelines. This allows families who need this help to get the food they need. The proposed change would give each family pre-assembled box of processed foods — with NO fresh fruits or vegetables. The food boxes would not even take into account food allergies, nutritional needs, or cultural traditions. This is unacceptable and dangerous — diet is not a "one size fits all" for everyone.
Not only would this change prevent families from choosing fresh fruits and vegetables, but it would create a ton of government waste that will take money away from actually helping people.
You'd think that Trump would like the current "free market model", but apparently he thinks so little of poor people that he doesn't even trust them to choose their own food.
