Honors Student Lost Her College Scholarship Because She Was Briefly Homeless

Zaviona Woodruff, an honors student and athlete at her local high school, may not have grown up with a lot of money, but her dreams of attending college always seemed attainable thanks to a scholarship she was promised. In her town, every student who goes through the Kalamazoo Public School district from K-12 is offered full tuition to attend a Michigan university.

Just before graduating, however, Woodruff was told she didn't qualify for the full tuition. The reason being is that her family had briefly become homeless and lived in a shelter. Her dad found an apartment, which wound up being just outside the district lines. Woodruff continued attending the same school and the school bus would even pick her up from this apartment, so she was unaware of the rule violation.

That technicality should not make her ineligible to receive the same tuition as her peers. If anything, her family's financial setback should make her MORE deserving of this kind of assistance.

Woodruff is currently working two jobs to try to keep her dreams of studying mechanical engineering at Oakland University in the fall alive. All the same, she's already worked hard for this opportunity. Therefore, we ask the Kalamazoo Promise staff to extend the slightest bit of leniency to Woodruff and award her the full scholarship that she's earned.
