More Counselors Where They Are Needed

In many communities, schools are one of the places that need the most help financially but also with the success of the children that attend there. Many schools have students that are being overlooked and just passed along through the school. Many public schools in poor communities have low graduation rates of 60% and getting higher. There are many children out there that could use the help of counselors to guide them in the right direction while in school. This would give the children the right tools to use in life as well to keep them on the right path and provide them with any outside services that they may need. The Children Act of 2004 did a great job at providing more counselor or mentors for students in schools where graduation rates were low. By adding more counselors or potential mentors such as teachers or parents, gave the student a safe and reliable person to go to for any services or guidance they made need (Jenkins and Polat 2006). According to the NASW from 6.04 Social and Political Action (b) Social workers should act to expand choice and opportunity for all people, with special regard for vulnerable, disadvantaged, oppressed, and exploited people and groups. This shows that all students have the right to any and all opportunity that those around them may have (National Association of Social Workers, (2017). By adding more counselors or mentors in schools, it gives all children the opportunity to have access to a greater future all because they were able to graduate from high school.
