Shut down all AIRBNBs on the Sunshine Coast NOW, in response to the covid-19 pandemic!

The Sunshine Coast has a small community hospital, not enough doctors to even meet the needs of residents, and only a handful of ventilators. The entire province has been mandated to STAY HOME. Businesses and services of all kinds are closed or highly restricted to essential needs only to help stop the spread of the coronavirus, and even our schools and universities have shut down. We are all on pause. Except for tourists and airbnb hosts.

Airbnbs on the Sunshine Coast are continuing to encourage and welcome visitors, bringing out-of-towners into our small communities that have extremely limited resources and are particularly vulnerable to the spread of a virus. Whether or not each individual airbnb host is able to socially distance themselves personally from their guests, they are STILL in our communities, at our grocery stores, gas stations and in our parks. People that are already on our ferries for non-essential travel are most certainly also undermining other measures of social distancing to stop the spread.

There is no health check to cross the ferry, and this virus is transmittable to our vulnerable, aging population, even when asymptomatic. Due to the pared down ferry schedules (in response to this pandemic), the last ferry back to the city for any kind of health emergency is 7:40 pm. The limited ferry schedule also puts essential travelers at risk of missing ferries for critical appointments and treatments, when they are full of tourists. We are in no position to be hosting tourists and guests, putting our isolated community at further risk. The potential cost to our community, our healthcare workers, and our district budget is enormous.

SCRD, we call on you to IMMEDIATELY follow in the footsteps of many other cities, districts and provinces across Canada and North America to require the FULL CLOSURE OF ALL AIRBNB SITES for the entire duration of the provincially mandated social distancing.

    Thank you.
