Sinead O'Connor Deserves a Second Chance. Invite Her Back to SNL Now!

25 years ago, Sinead O'Connor was invited to perform as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. But after using her performance as a platform for protest, she was never invited back. In fact, Sinead O'Connor's career quickly derailed after the performance, as the talented singer was ostracized by the media and her peers.

So what exactly was Sinead O'Connor protesting that cost her her career? Sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.

That's right — decades before the Church's rampant sexual abuse problem became public knowledge in the U.S., Sinead O'Connor tried to bravely speak up. And she was shunned for it.

That's why we're calling on Saturday Night Live to help make up for this gross injustice by inviting Sinead O'Connor back as a musical performer this season.

During that fateful performance 25 years ago, Sinead O'Connor sang an a capella cover of Bob Marley's "War," changing the lyrics to make the song a commentary on sexual abuse against children rather than racial inequality. When she was finished singing, she held up a photo of Pope John Paul II that used to live in her childhood home and ripped it up, saying "Fight the real enemy."

Stars from Joe Pesci to Madonna to Frank Sinatra called out the singer, and she was vilified extensively in the media. Her career never regained the momentum it once had.

Since that performance, however, people have become much more aware of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. Just this year, Cardinal Theodore McCarrick became the first cardinal to ever step down due to alleged sexual abuse, and more than 300 Pennsylvania priests were implicated as child rapists in a damning grand jury report detailing 70 years of abuse and cover-ups in six different archdioceses.

Sinead O'Connor spoke truth to power at great expense to her career. We can't change history, but we can try to make it right now.

Please join in urging Saturday Night Live to give Sinead O'Connor a platform once more by inviting her back as a musical performer.
