Tell Congress: Block President Trump's budget cuts to education

Once again, nearly 1.7 million kids are at risk of losing their afterschool programs.

On February 12th, President Trump's administration laid out a proposed budget that would reduce overall education spending by billions of dollars. This budget would eliminate funding for vital youth-serving organizations that provide afterschool programs.

There is no time to lose - contact Congress TODAY to urge your representatives to say NO to these harmful budget cuts.

These eliminations put the future of millions of students at risk nationwide. Nearly 14.5 million children under the age of 18 live in poverty and every day must overcome barriers to getting their chance at the American Dream. A great nation cannot pick and choose among its people, and we should not cut the programs that benefit the children who need the most support.

Please – contact your representatives NOW and urge them to say NO to these harmful budget cuts and YES to supporting at-risk students who are counting on us to succeed.

To whom it may concern:

Thank you for your support of local afterschool and summer learning programs that rely on federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) funding to provide quality programs to nearly 1.7 million young people. As Congress works to finish the FY2018 spending process and starts the FY2019 process, I urge you to take the proposed Senate Appropriations Committee spending level and reject any cuts to the program.

Support for public investment in afterschool and summer learning programs is high. The recently-released Phi Delta Kappa International (PDK) Poll of Public's Attitudes Towards Public Schools found that 92 percent of Americans believe public schools should provide afterschool programs.

A little bit of federal investment goes a long way to support afterschool learning opportunities of all kinds at the local level. 21st CCLC grantees partner with an average of 9 organizations in their community, each contributing an average of $67,000 in additional funding and multiplying the impact of every federal dollar spent.

Afterschool and summer learning programs help working families by keeping kids safe and productively engaged when school is not in session – the time when youth are most at risk of losing ground. A wide range of research shows that regular participation in high-quality summer and afterschool learning programs is linked to significant gains in academics, school attendance, and work habits, as well as reductions in behavior problems among disadvantaged students. Without funding for summer and afterschool programs, students will lose out on essential learning opportunities that help them prepare for school, college, and careers.

When you vote on a final FY2018 omnibus spending bill this year, I strongly urge you to maintain or increase funding to the 21st CCLC initiative and provide at least $1.192 billion for afterschool and summer learning programs. And when you turn your attention to funding for government for FY2019, I ask that you reject the Administration's proposal and protect this important lifeline for students, families, and communities.
