Right To Parent Petition
This petition is
in support of parents with physical disabilities to have access to
affordable baby care equipment and to spearhead legislation to
subsidize a limited infant care fund so persons with temporary medical
needs and/or physical disability have the ability to hire infant
caregivers to assist mothers and fathers with baby care activities
until age five.
As more women and men of reproductive age with physical disabilities
complete higher education and acquire gainful employment the desire to
start a family increases. Many women with a physical disabilitiy are
prepared for parenthood, but are severely challenged by the lack
of social support by social service agencies to help parents find accessible
and affordable baby care equipment to make baby care activities easier.
In addition, many low income disabled families receive no support for a
infant caregiver to assist with the most intensive baby care activities
of daily living. Some women may receive In Home Supportive Services that assists with the cost of personal care needs, but are not afforded the additional funds to hire a provider for the additional physical responsibilities baby care requirements place on activities of daily living. Relying on family members and charity organizations
may not be a adequate solution when considering families do not have
choices or flexability to find the best infant care provider for their needs.
This petition is the first step to enable
parents with a physical disability ascertain the necessary tools and
resources to make parenting with a disability easier in California. This petition is open to California residents only. I urge you to lend
your support to this petition by signing it, telling other people in your networks, and/or writing your elected official about this issue.
