As each of us takes steps in our own life to combat global warming - recycling, using non-toxic products, changing lightbulbs - the EPA, the very agency that should be leading the way toward cleaner energy, is
writing proposals to help coal companies pollute our National Parks!
The EPA's proposed rule would
invite coal-fired power plants to emit more pollution in our National Parks and Wilderness Areas, which by law are supposed to have the cleanest air in the country.
The EPA is allowing coal plant operators and other big industries to submit misleading and inaccurate reports describing how much pollution is already in our National Parks and Wilderness Areas. By pretending these areas are cleaner than they actually are, these big polluters can then get permission from EPA to add more pollution. EPA's proposed rule allows these industries to circumvent the strict pollution limits that Congress created for National Parks and Wilderness Areas.

I was outraged to learn about EPA's proposed rule change that would undermine laws that protect air quality in "Class I" national parks, which are supposed to have the cleanest air in the country. How can you justify defying the law to allow greater emissions?
The prevention of significant deterioration program was designed to prevent air quality in Class I areas from getting worse. Yet EPA's rule would employ accounting gimmicks that open the door to more pollution. Changing this rule would degrade air in Class I areas--and have devastating effects on delicate ecosystems, wildlife, and visitor experience in national parks.
