Should people with sight loss receive the care they deserve?

Meet Vicky, one of our volunteer campaigners.

Living with sight loss, Vicky soon learnt that this world has not been made for people like her.

Every day activities are a challenge for people with sight loss. Many local establishments haven't adapted to meet their needs - pavements are a minefield of unseen obstacles and buildings are inaccessible. The world seems complicated, unfriendly and, in certain cases - dangerous.

As part of the 2014 Care Act, all councils in England should provide a service called vision rehabilitation. This is a lifeline service working with people with sight loss to help them develop their skills and to live at home independently. It also teaches people how to negotiate the many obstacles and risks around them, including how to use a white cane, get on a bus and cross a road safely.

One in every two people living with sight loss do not receive the support they need from their council. They are left waiting to rebuild their lives because funding for vision rehabilitation services has been cut by an average of 15% over the last five years.

When vision rehabilitation services are properly resourced, the crucial training and advice they provide can make a huge difference to the daily lives of people experiencing sight loss.

Urgent action is needed to protect these funds. Pledge your support for our campaign "See, Plan and Provide" to ensure that blind and partially sighted people can access the right vision rehabilitation support, at the right time.
