Tell American Electric Power: Fund Clean Air, Not Lawsuits

American Electric Power is spending millions of ratepayer dollars on lawsuits that would give them the right to pollute our air, water and food with mercury.

They should be investing in scrubbing mercury emissions from their power plants -- something their colleagues in the coal industry have already done. AEP can certainly afford it and we can't afford the cost of mercury pollution to our childrens' health.

Send a message to AEP CEO Nick Akins telling him to fund clean air, not pro-polluter lawsuits.
To: Nick Akins, CEO of American Electric Power

Subject: Fund clean air, not lawsuits

As President and CEO of American Electric Power, you know better than most people that mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants are poisonous. You know what doctors and scientists have proven many times over: mercury is a potent neurotoxin that harms the developing brains, hearts, and lungs of fetuses and toddlers.

Congress -- representing the American people -- passed a regulation to cut poisonous mercury emissions from coal plants. So why are you leading a charge to tie up the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards in courts -- for years to come?

You are wasting rate payers money -- millions of dollars -- on industry lawsuits to give you and your allies the right to pollute our air, waterways, and foods with mercury.

Please spend the rate payer money on scrubbing mercury emissions from your plants -- as many of your colleagues in the coal industry have already done. You can afford it. And we cannot afford the costs to our babies' health -- and parents' peace of mind.

Mercury is poison. No one needs it in our air.

We know you can do the right thing. We applaud your leadership on energy efficiency initiatives. So please, drop the lawsuits. Be responsible citizens.

Mercury is poison. America's political leaders voted to stop mercury emissions. Don't break your rate payers' trust. Don't contribute to years more of broken hearts -- and damaged brains for our children.
