Tell Governor Newsom: Support suicide prevention and critical mental health care measures

We are facing another impending public health crisis brought on by the coronavirus pandemic: an overwhelming need for mental health care and a shortage of services to respond to these needs. According to recent studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), anxiety disorders, substance use, and suicidal thoughts are rapidly on the rise right now.

One step toward a healthier California for all: Urging Governor Newsom to sign Assembly Bills 3242 and 2112.

Assembly Bill 2112 would authorize a new Office of Suicide Prevention to lead research and prevention efforts for toxic stress and youth suicide — now the second most common cause of death among those ages 10-24.

Co-sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the California Hospital Association, California, AB 3242 would improve response times to hospitals' emergency requests for mental health evaluations by allowing assessments to be done via telehealth or other technology. That means patients won't have to face unreasonably long wait times when they need immediate care for mental health emergencies.

Together, we can tell the Governor to prioritize mental health care access now, in this crucial time for communities across the state. Voice your support by adding your name today!
Governor Newsom,

As you're well aware, the impacts of COVID-19 extend far beyond physical health. It's been a burden on the economy, a strain on our health care system, and a heavy weight on our mental health, too. Across the state, the need for mental health care is increasing in the midst of the pandemic, especially for communities of color — and access to care must increase to match it.

I'm writing today to urge you to sign Assembly Bills 3242 and 2112, which both aim to make mental health treatment more accessible and expand suicide prevention efforts in California.

Right now, there are millions of Californians struggling to manage behavioral health issues — and it's much too difficult to get the care they need. According to recent studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), anxiety disorders, substance use, and suicidal thoughts are rapidly on the rise as you read this.

Assembly Bill 2112 authorizes a new Office of Suicide Prevention to lead research and prevention efforts for youth suicide and toxic stress, which is crucial since suicide is now the second most common cause of death among those ages 10-24. It's critical that we prioritize this issue in support of children, young adults, and their families during this period of increased stress.

Assembly Bill 3242, cosponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), California and the California Hospital Association aims to make mental health assessments and treatment quicker and more accessible through telehealth and other remote technology. Along with the hardship brought on by the pandemic, we've also learned a valuable lesson: Telehealth is an effective and safe way to deliver timely assessments and follow-up care — even in a crisis. Now it's time to put this lesson into practice.

You've shown that mental health care for Californians is a priority in the past, Governor, and now we're asking for you to prioritize it again in this time of urgent need. Please sign AB 2112 and AB 3242.

Thank you,
