Fix the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program to help those who dedicated their lives to public service!

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness is a great idea gone bad: student borrowers who work 10 years in public service were promised that their remaining student debt would be forgiven. But because of bureaucracy and red tape, the Department of Education rejects 98 out of every 100 public service workers who apply to have their debts cancelled—leaving our troops, hospital workers, public school teachers, and other public servants with debt and broken promises:

  • 98% of applicants have been denied loan forgiveness.
  • Only 5% of the nearly 5,500 military applicants had their loan forgiven.
  • Mismanagement and abuse by student loan companies has left hundreds of thousands deeper in debt, and blocked access to loan forgiveness for those with older federal loans.

But we can fix this mess, so the promise made to those who dedicated their lives to public service is kept!

The Biden Administration is re-examining this program, and is looking for public input until Sept. 24. The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program is broken, and Education Secretary Cardona must immediately deliver on the promise of student debt relief to the millions of borrowers who worked 10 years in public service and kept current with their payments.

For all borrowers who have worked a decade in public service, the Department of Education should immediately discharge all their federal student loans in full. Every borrower should also get credit for every month spent in public service, regardless of the type of federal student loan, payment plan, or other so-called requirements. Also, red tape and bureaucratic hurdles should not be a barrier to action—the Secretary should use all legal tools available to eliminate these debts, and keep the promise made to these public servants.
