Save the Clean Water Act

In 1972 Congress passed the Clean Water Act to make the nation's waters safe for fishing and swimming, eliminate harmful discharges of pollution, and protect the nation's wetlands. Now, this landmark law and the waters it protects are under attack. Ask your Members of Congress to tell the Bush administration to reject the attempt by polluting industries to reverse 30 years of progress and instead make sure that the Clean Water Act continues to protect all of our nation's waters.

The EPA is currently reviewing the over 130,000 public comments that were submitted during the agency’s public comment period.

Now is the time to tell your elected officials you support the Clean Water Act, so sign the petition below to send your letter to Congress today!
Dear Senator/Representative,

I strongly oppose the Bush administration's efforts to eliminate Clean Water Act protections for many of the nation's waters, including streams, wetlands, small ponds and other waters.

I am writing to urge you to express your opposition to any weakening of the Clean Water Act’s regulations and to sign on to the “Dear Colleague” letter to President Bush that is being circulated in the House by Representatives Dingell, Saxton, Oberstar, and Leach, and in the Senate by Senators Feingold, Jeffords, and Boxer asking the President to discontinue this rulemaking and to uphold the Clean Water Act.

The EPA's and Corps of Engineers' January 15 Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking is an attempt to limit the Clean Water Act's jurisdiction over waters that are important to public health and the environment. This proposal is in direct conflict with the original intent of the Clean Water Act -- to maintain the chemical, physical and biological integrity of all waters of the United States.

Limiting the scope of the Clean Water Act will have devastating effects in our community and around the country. Removing essential federal safeguards against destruction and degradation of our waters will result in more polluted streams, rivers, lakes, and coastal waters, place community water supplies at risk, destroy wetlands important for controlling flooding, and injure wildlife including endangered and threatened species, 43 percent of which rely on wetlands for survival.

Please sign the “Dear Colleague” letter from members of Congress to tell the Bush administration not to go forward with any rulemaking proposal that would limit the scope of the Clean Water Act and hinder the ability of communities nationwide to safeguard their valuable water resources.
