Ban the Death Penalty in Illinois

Update: The Illinois Coalition Against the Death Penalty is asking people to call the Governor's office at 217-782-0244. Please call and ask him to sign the ban.

Ten years ago, Illinois's then Governor George Ryan placed a moratorium on the death penalty. He did so because of revelations that several people sent to death row were actually innocent. Now the Illinois House has voted to ban the death penalty entirely. The vote comes at a time when more and more problems with death penalty proceedings are being reported.

The fact is that the death penalty system is broken beyond repair, and needs to be outlawed in Illinois and elsewhere.

The next step for Illinois is for its current Governor Pat Quinn to sign the bill into law. His approval isn't assured though, because he is on record as supporting the death penalty. But if we can help Illinois to abolish the death penalty, then there's a chance other states like Colorado, Connecticut, Kansas, Maryland and Montana might follow suit.

Help bring an end to the death penalty in Illinois and the rest of the U.S. Urge Governor Pat Quinn to sign the ban on capital punishment.
I write to urge you to sign the bill abolishing the death penalty.
