Sign the Petition: Disarm Domestic Abusers in Michigan

If you're a Michigan resident, sign the petition today to protect survivors of intimate partner violence from armed abusers.

Firearms and intimate partner violence are inextricably linked. In Michigan, two-thirds of women killed by an intimate partner were killed with a gun.

Michigan lawmakers have the opportunity to protect survivors of intimate partner violence by passing legislation that would prohibit abusers convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence crimes from possessing firearms.

Creating a state legal prohibitor ensures that abusers are unable to cause further harm to those they have abused with a gun and reduces the risk of death or bodily harm to a victim by an abuser.

But what about federal law that already prohibits abusers from possessing firearms? State and local prosecutors are unable to enforce the federal prohibition because they lack the appropriate jurisdiction. They need a similar state law prohibition in order to prosecute those that violate the law in Michigan.

States laws that prohibit firearm possession by those convicted of any violent misdemeanor were associated with a 21% reduction in firearm intimate partner homicide.
