Tell the RNC: Sign the Civility Statement

Fanning the flames of hate is beginning to reach it's logical conclusion.

Nine members of a "Patriot" militia group called the Hutaree were arrested for allegedly plotting to kill a police officer and attack law enforcement vehicles with improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at the fallen officer's funeral. This was only part of the Michigan-based group's larger plot to engage state and federal officials in armed combat.

What's more alarming, the Republican National Committee rejected an invitation in late March to sign on to a joint 'civility' statement with the DNC in an effort to scale back the overheated rhetoric. The statement would call on Americans to reject intimidation, violence, and vandalism and to respect differences of opinion.

Call on Michael Steele and the RNC to sign the civility statement and take a stronger stand against hateful speech and actions before someone gets hurt.

Dear RNC Chairman Michael Steele,

As Americans, we urge the Republic National Committee to please sign the joint civility statement with the Democratic National Committee. We are very concerned about the level of hateful rhetoric and the potential for real violence, especially in light of the recent arrests in Michigan where a militia group there was allegedly plotting to attack law enforcement officials.

This transcends political party -- the joint statement is about a free America where you can express your views without fear of intimidation or violent retribution. Please do all you can to dial back the heated rhetoric that fans the flames of hate and may even incite some to turn to violence.

In America we must respect differences of opinion and national leaders should set a strong example. I call upon the RNC to join the DNC and sign on to the joint civility statement.
