Cancel the TV Show "24"

I realize that the FOX show "24" is still fairly popular.    
Like "X-Files" or "Lost", it has it's share of loyal fans.

But I propose that "24" be cancelled.
Here's why:
"24" was intriguing when it came out.  The "real-time" format was an interesting idea. 
But "24" rapidly became a right-wing fantasy, where our nation is surrounded by implacable two dimensional enemies, and riddled with politicians who just aren't brave enough to defend us.
Only the brave Jack Bauer is willing to do what must be done !   What a patriot!   And junkie.   And torturer.
Yes, the protagonist on "24" is a torturer, and proud of it.   
Torture, in the United States, is unconstitutional and unforgivable.   Yet "24" glorifies this crime and attempts to justify it as necessary.
But is torture really necessary?
In the real world, actual interrogators say torture is completely unreliable as a way of getting information.    
Instead they employ techniques of befriending low-level informants, which leads them to new avenues of investigation and allows them to confirm the information thus gained from multiple sources.
If the subject is hostile, there ARE allowable techniques for use on known criminals, such as sleep deprivation or drug interrogation, that do not amount to torture and MAY yield some result, even though that information would be useless for prosecution.

But to top it off, torture just doesn't work.
Essentially, a person being tortured will tell you whatever you want to hear, just to get you to stop.   This has been proven, time and again.
If you waste time following false leads obtained from torture, you risk the very real possibility of overlooking the true threat to National Security.
And of course, there is the dark certainty that innocent bystanders will be swept up, HAVE been swept up, accused of crimes they did not commit, and tortured as a result.    
A Democratic nation cannot commit such acts and expect to prosper.
And suppose you DID find some fanatic, a member of a terrorist group.   Do you really think that someone willing to blow himself up doesn't possess sufficient resolve to resist torture?   Or use the opportunity to plant disinformation?
How far should the interrogators be allowed to go?   
Flaying?  Dismemberment, castration, rape?
How far down this mad slope should we venture?

I say, don't go there.  We can defend our Nation and our people without becoming monsters.
It's obvious to me that FOX's "24" is circling the drain.
We need to move into the future, and become a more just society, not regress to the Dark Ages.
"24" feeds the dark fantasies of Right-Wingers, just as much as Rush Limbaugh and Hannity do.
"24" must die.
