President Obama is considering appointing a former Monsanto vice president, Mike Taylor, to head the Food Safety Working Group at the FDA.
As Jill Richardson writes at LaVidaLocavore, Taylor thinks the FDA wastes too much time on food safety inspections at meat packing plants.
If you have read anything about the horrendous working conditions at US meatpacking plants you know food borne illnesses, like the recent outbreaks of E-coli in the food supply can often be traced back to beef slaughter practices that do not protect consumers from contamination.
As noted at the Ethicurean, Mr. Taylor is also responsible for killing legislation that would have compelled producers of milk containing rBGH/rBST to label their product as containing these hormones. Bovine growth hormone is not safe for consumption by humans.
Mr. Taylor may soon be heading up a food safety working group within the FDA.
