Missouri, Don't Allow Women to Be Fired for Using Birth Control

  • by: Kevin Mathews
  • recipient: Missouri State Senate Majority Leader Mike Kehoe

The Missouri House has passed SB 5, a bill that permits bosses and landlords to discriminate against women based on their reproductive health choices.

If a boss morally objects to a woman having an abortion, he can fire her. However, if she decides not to terminate the pregnancy, he can also fire her for being pregnant out of wedlock. And if she chooses to use birth control to avoid getting pregnant in the first place, it turns out that her boss can fire her for that, too.

We're asking the Missouri state Senate to stand up for women and acknowledge that this legislation leaves women susceptible to discrimination for pretty much any sexual health choice they make other than abstaining altogether. This puts almost all adult women in the state at risk of being fired or evicted at the whim of someone else.

Reject SB 5.
