You may have noticed a trend in many movies and TV shows about women: they often feature sexual assault. While sexual assault is a real problem and I'm thrilled people are starting to care about it and believe victims in the real world, I find that this is actually used as a lazy trope for female characters in film and tv.
Please sign my petition if you want Netflix to create more series with strong female leads that don't feature sexual assault or rape. Sometimes rape is used thoughtfully and actually develops a character and speaks to the human experience. Other times,
like in Godless, it is used unnecessarily and as a cheap and lazy way to explain female strength.
I am the victim and survivor of rape, so I know all too well how something like this can change you and maybe even make you stronger. But I do not appreciate it being a catch all explanation for why a woman is strong. That's not everybody's story and I'm sick of it being used as though it's the only thing a woman can experience.
Also, because I am the victim and survivor or rape, I don't always want to see depictions of it. But I do want to see strong female led series.
