Congressmen, Congresswomen, and Presidents should be Veterans

This petition is not meant to target or criticise any present members of Congress in the Senate or House of Representatives, nor the current President.  This is purely based on an ideal for the future.

I believe that all Congressmen, Congresswomen, and anyone who would hold the office of President of the United States of America should be required to have served at least 4 years in one of the 4 branches of the US Military on Active Duty status.

The reason for this belief is simple.  To serve our nation you must be familiar with the idea of sacrificing your time, sweat, and blood for the good of America, its people, and the Constitution.  There is no better teacher of that lesson than Active Duty military service.

Second to that, a requirement of military service would guarantee Presidents, Congressmen, and Congresswomen would have a more comprehensive idea of the reality of military actions as well as a personal knowledge of what is really being sacrificed by the military men and women effected by their decisions.  What I mean by this is that they would be better informed in making any decisions reguarding military actions or policy.  This is an experience which no amount of reading reports or hearing the accounts of those who have served can make up for.  Leaders with that experience would be able to act more wisely and decisively and would be less likely to engage in actions that are foolish or too costly in US tax dollars and lives to be worth the gain, particularly when there is no gain at all for the American People.
