Safer Streets in Modesto, along Orangeburg Ave between Coffee Rd and Rose Ave

Over the past few years there have been a number of severe vehicle accidents on East Orangeburg between Coffee Rd and Rose Ave. In 2018 there were vehicles totaled on November 18th, December 8th, December 15th, and recently on June 13th, 2019, for just the personally known occasions. There are a number of causes, from DUIs, irresponsible speeds, distracted driving and negligent consideration for the fact this is a RESIDENTIAL neighborhood with families, children, and pets. City of Modesto must act in a responsible way to its residents, as we are tax paying and law-abiding citizens that deserve to live in a peaceful home, not worrying if we will fall victim next. What would happen when a vehicle ends up in a living room killing an innocent family due to a speeding driver's car losing control? So far, we've been fortunate that most damage has been to property and not a life. But when is enough, enough? Signing this petition means you agree we need to change the pattern of driver's behavior in our neighborhood and reduce the risk of damage or harm.

Proposal for change and solutions provided are as follows:

1. Speed-humps (15 mph) periodically starting after Coffee Rd heading east toward Rose Ave. The first just prior to Palomar Way, at the Max Bus stop by Five Star Burger, the second at the following Max Bus stop by Gary Ln, a third by Lorry Ave next to the Max Bus stop. There should not be any further necessary speed-humps as Orangeburg Ave road turns slightly prior to Rose Ave, where there is a stop sign.

2. Road division bumps in white, to line the shoulder divider from the street, along where parallel vehicles line the street. This is to encourage vehicles to stay in their lane. As after Orangeburg Ave curves past Rose Ave stop sign, it has been an observation that vehicles continue to encroach the shoulder due their steering corrections. The bumps are to physically and audibly cue drivers to their drifting vehicle, outside the lane of traffic, much like the center divider bumps do for on-coming traffic.
