Breastfeeding mothers should be EXCUSED from jury duty!

I have been called to serve jury duty in my county for approximately four days. I exclusively breastfeed my six month old son. Although I tried to defer myself (not EXCUSE myself) from my duty because I was breastfeeding, I was denied and told if I did not come at the designated day and time I would be brought in by an officer to fulfill my duties.

Other states protect mothers and their infants from this infringement on thier rights as a breastfeeding mother but Indiana does NOT. Breastfeeding is a commitment, a lifestyle, a CHOICE and should not be interrupted because someone else broke the law!

If a woman is asked to serve as a juror while exclusively breastfeeding, their infant could become confused by a bottle, have feeding issues, or refuse a bottle therefore going unfed. The mother will have to start pumping which is costly and inconvenient, they will need many breaks at court to pump while they are away, and the situation will be extremely emotional for both mother and infant.

I believe mothers who exclusively breastfeed thier infants should be EXEMPT or EXCUSED from jury duty until thier infant is at least one year of age! Please help protect breastfeeding mothers in this situation by signing this petition and passing it along to your friends and family members to sign as well!
